Helpful tips for freelancers and contractors

Can I take out a policy just for the duration of my contract?

Freelance contractors often ask whether they can take out a policy to cover only the period of their contract.

Professional Indemnity insurance cover applies to protect policyholders against claims made during the period of the policy, even though the contended work may have been undertaken before the policy year started.

When a Professional Indemnity policy expires, if a claim arises and no valid insurance is in force then the claim will be uninsured.

This makes it vital to have cover continuously in place to protect your assets and for a few years after you finish contracting.  Premiums will typically reduce during this ‘run-off’ period, subject to a minimum amount.
